Rita Levi-Montalcini
Rita Levi-Montalcini (22 April - 30 December )[1][2] was an Italianneurologist.[3] She won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in for her discovery of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). She shared the Nobel Prize with Stanley Cohen with whom she made the discovery.
She was the first Nobel Prize winner to have reached years of age.
Levi-Montalcini was the third of four children. Her parents were Adamo Levi and Adele Montalcini. She was born on April 22, , in Turin, Italy. Her father wanted her to attend a high school which prepared girls for marriage, but Levi-Montalcini did not want to have children. Although she wanted to go to a university, her parents did not support that idea. Three years later, her governess (nanny) got cancer. This inspired her decision to become a doctor.
