Englund's father, Kent McDonald, was involved in the development of the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft project.

    Englund's journey into acting began at the age of 12 when he started learning the craft. He later attended drama courses at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Oakland University.
